Rap Battle: Jamal v. Hakeem

When you are raised by a mother like Loretha ‘Cookie’ Lyon and a father like Lucious there aren’t many people out there with the ability to intimidate you. This has been proven by the way Hakeem and Jamal have stomped the competition in their rap battles.

Hakeem, from Empire to Lyon Dynasty, the former Lyon is on a mission to prove his critics wrong. We saw Hakeem on Empire’s ‘My Bad Parts’ episode go bar-for-bar with Freda Gatz before ultimately destroying her along with his last name.

Don’t sleep on Jamal. From Empire’s initial season to the show’s current season, Jamal has had to prove himself to numerous haters, leading Lucious to place him in charge of Empire Entertainment.

If you want to be a Lyon (or former Lyon) you must train with Lyons. So who would win a rap battle between Jamal and Hakeem?

Hakeem has no fear when it comes to his father, as is true with Jamal. From Empire’s earliest episodes of the show’s first season Jamal has been standing up to Lucious. The same is true with Hakeem. On Empire’s ‘Sinned Against‘ episode Hakeem informed his father: “This son can’t be bought.”

Since most folks — including myself — is getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow, here’s a quick recap of this week’s Empire episode to keep you up-to-date on the show and give you something to talk about dinner on Thursday that isn’t an intense conversation about politics or what you’re doing with your life.

Lucious figured out Laz’s deal and confronted him in front of Cookie, who seems to be okay with her ex-husband now. But Lucious is still not okay with youngest son Hakeem and Lucious decides to now shower his favor all over Andre and Rhonda (who is finally showing a baby bump! The baby is real, y’all!) in the form of a brand new huge mansion that he bought for them and their new family.

While visiting the new mansion, Rhonda and Anika once again bond — this time, it’s about the lengths one should go to keep a man. Anika tries to keep Hakeem, but fails in her efforts to embarrass Laura’s poor roots. I have a feeling Anika will not stop here, though. She’s got a whole hate-dream board filled with her Hakeem obsession. And that raises the questions: Does she have a Lucious board, too? Or did she only date Lucious to get to Hakeem? I’m going to stop asking questions because it’s getting weird.

In Philly, Cookie and Candace team up with Rosie O’Donnell (for real) to find addict Carol, who is seriously a mess. Candace and Carol also have a secret about what Carol did while Cookie was in jail. Jamal teams up to record with Alicia Keyes as Skye Summers, a soulful purple-haired pop artist. They bond, they make beautiful music together and they KISS! Jamal is as shocked as the audience is.

Next week is the fall finale and it looks like anything goes.

Courtney Love heard rumors that Empire’s co-creator, Lee Daniels, wanted to work with her yet she was still surprised when he asked her to make a guest appearance on the Empire TV show. After a friend gave Courtney Lee Daniels’ number, she texted him and he called her two minutes later, explaining to Love that he had a role for her.

Courtney Love’s role as Elle Dallas on season 1 of the Empire TV show was unforgettable. She is a top-selling artist at Empire Entertainment managed by Cookie Lyon.

Love explained that she was originally going to play a Whitney Houston kind of character yet she is Courtney is no R&B singer therefore the Patti LaBelle song Lee Daniels wanted her to sing didn’t quite work out. Daniels used his talent to overcome the issue, changing the role to be more appropriate for Love’s amazing rock voice.

Elle Dallas’ Empire reign may be over for now but we are hoping she makes an appearance in the near-future! She was one of the show’s only characters raw enough to match Cookie Lyon’s intensity.
