Al B. Sure Son On Star – Quincy Brown Plays Derrick Jones

Al B. Sure’s son, Quincy Brown, plays Derrick Jones on Star.  Derrick lives next door to Carlotta (Queen Latifah).  In the Pilot, we see him try to convince Carlotta to support his Black Lives Mater protest.  Carlotta tries to ignore him, but Derrick is too passionate about his beliefs.  Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) is attracted to Derrick’s passion.

She asks him about his plans to change the world.  While he’s focused on protests, Alex believes in the power of music.  In episode 2, “The Devil You Know” we see Alex and Derrick making love.  Lee Daniels is the director of Star therefore the series moves fast.  Ryan compliments Derrick’s skills and he tells her he learned his moves from watching porn.

Derrick then tells Alex that he likes her.  He wants to know about her but Alex isn’t proud of her family.  She tells Derrick that her mother’s dead.  Derrick reveals that his mother passed away when he was 7.  Later, we find out that Alex’s mother, Rose Spencer (Naomi Campbell) is actually alive.  Alex is ashamed of her because she’s an alcoholic who never pursued her dream to become a model.

Derrick further explains that his father was a police officer who was shot while on duty when Derrick was 12-years-old.

Lee Daniels is using Star and Empire to share his life story.  Daniels’ father put him in a trash can the same way Lucious put Jamal in a trash can.  Daniels’ father was a police officer, killed in the line of duty, just like Derrick’s father was killed in the line of duty.
