Chance the Rapper advised fans to Google “Bettie Jones” in his song, “Joy.” Jones was the 55-year-old Chicago woman who was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer on December 26, 2015. The incident took place on a Saturday morning. Jones’ upstairs neighbor, Antonio LeGrier, called the police for help because his son, Quintonio LeGrier, was upset and he had a bat.
When officers arrived at the West Garfield Park home, Antonio called Bettie to open the door for the police. His son, Quintonio was swinging the bat. When Bettie opened her front door, one of the police officers opened fire, killing Quintonio. The 19-year-old became combative and was acting erratically. Bettie Jones was caught in the crossfire.
