Durag History Week

Durag History Week was trending on Twitter this morning and this post features some unforgettable durag moments from the past few decades.  Terrence Howard has been wearing durags for years and the character he plays on Empire, Lucious Lyon, has also been seen in the stylish headwear.  Scroll to the video below to see him wearing a durag in one of the show’s most memorable scenes to date.

Durags are very similar to the scarves black women wore on their heads during the United States’ slavery period.  Prior to the 1990s, many African Americans wore women’s stockings to bed in an attempt to get waves.  The polyester stocking caps became an urban fashion statement by the 1990s.

In the 1990s, durags were worn by some of the most popular rappers and entertainers in the world.  Many of the individuals who wore them were not worried about their hairstyles, instead they loved the look.

The following video shows Jay Z and DMX in the late 90s.  The two rappers are freestyling, backstage during Jay’s Hard Knock Life tour.  Jigga loved durags in the 1990s and 2000s.

Slim Shady’s swag enabled him to pull off the fashion statement but he couldn’t outdo Kip.  In one of the most amazing scenes from the 2004 film, Napoleon Dynamite, Kip keeps it gangsta:
