El Chapo’s son, Ovidio Guzmán Lopez, was briefly detained by authorities on Thursday, October 17, 2019. Lopez is the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel which was previously led by his father. Authorities ultimately freed Ovidio Guzmán Lopez after finding themselves outgunned in a brutal shootout with cartel members that left eight people dead and nearly 30 wounded.

El Chapo married his first wife, Alejandrina María Salazar Hernández in 1977. The couple had a small ceremony in Jesús María, Sinaloa. Alejandrina is related to Hector Luis Palma Salazar a.k.a. “El Güero Palma” the former co-leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. Hector and El Chapo started working together in the late 1970s.

El Chapo divorced his first wife in the late 1970s and he married Griselda López Pérez in 1980. The former couple had four children.
