James Anthony Smith is the 17-year-old Ballou High School student who was killed for his “Jordan 11″ sneakers. The incident occurred on Monday in Washington, D.C. James was at a basketball court at the Frederick Douglas Community Center in Southeast, one of D.C.’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Someone attacked Smith and the 17-year-old was found shot and shoeless.
James passed away a few hours later. Smith’s mother, Benita, explains that the $220 Jordans were an early Christmas gift. The red shoes came out on December 9, 2017 and were known as the “Win Like 96” Jordans. In 1996, Michael Jordan won his fourth championship with the Chicago Bulls and wore a black, white and red version of the sneakers.

In the video at the end of this article, James’ mother says that she’s sorry that she bought her son the sneakers. The crack epidemic of the 1980s and 90s nearly destroyed Washington, D.C. and the city continues to deal with crime and violence.
