In Lee’s interview on The View he explains the differences between Star and Empire. The director says that Empire is about a family in the music business after they’ve found success whereas Star is about a group’s struggle to find success.
Empire‘s music is typically listed as one of the reasons for the show’s success. Although Lee is aware of this, he explains that he doesn’t enjoy today’s music. He says music today is over produced and artists focus on their appearance more than the sound.
