Kendrick Lamar’s mom, Paula Oliver, named Kendrick singer, Eddie Kendricks of The Temptations.  Paula is from Chicago and moved to Compton, California in 1984.  Three years later she gave birth to Kendrick.  When Paula moved to California she worked at McDonald’s.  Her and Kendrick’s father couldn’t afford an apartment so they slept in their car and motels.

Kendrick’s father, Kenny Duckworth, was a member of Gangster Disciples, a gang that was formed in Chicago.  Kendrick’s mother got tired of the street life and threatened to leave Kendrick’s father.  That’s when the family decided to leave Chicago and move to California.  Kenny told Kendrick that he worked at KFC but he was really selling drugs.
