Shaggy was born Orville Richard Burrell on October 22, 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was nicknamed Shaggy after the Scooby-Doo character. In the late 1980s he started taking singing classes. In 1988, Shaggy moved to Brooklyn, New York and decided to join the Marine to earn a steady income.

Shaggy performed with Sting at the Grammys but it was a different “Sting” that helped him rise to fame. Shaun Pizzonia’s nickname is also Sting. He was a DJ and studio engineer and he helped Shaggy get a job at Phillip Smart’s studio, a renowned engineer and producer. Shaggy recorded his debut single “Mampie” at Smart’s HC&F studio.
In 1993, Shaggy released his hit “Oh Carolina” which was featured on his debut album, Pure Pleasure. His breakout album, Boombastic was released on July 11, 1995. It went platinum and earned Shaggy a Grammy. He has released 12 albums and many consider him the biggest crossover success in dancehall reggae.
