The Washington Post reports that Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber, won the 2016 Miss USA pageant. ABC reports that the 26-year-old Army officer is the first-ever military member to be crowned Miss USA. She’s headed to compete in the Miss Universe contest!

So what does Miss USA win?
Barber will receive an amazing apartment in New York City, a scholarship to the New York Film Academy along with a modeling portfolio by Fadil Berisha. That’s not all!
Barber will also receive gifts from the event’s sponsors, the opportunity to travel around the country as a goodwill ambassador and consultation with a wardrobe stylist plus access to an appearance wardrobe.

She was born on December 6, 1989 in Georgia. Her father was in the military so she moved multiple times when she was younger. Following her father’s footsteps, she joined the United States Army when she was 17-years-old.
She actually comes from a family full of military members. Her mother, sister and brother are all in the Army. She attended Virginia State University and graduated in 2011 with a degree in business management. In 2011 she was also crowned Miss Virginia International:

The runner-up was Miss Hawaii, Chelsea Hardin. The top five also included (3) Emanii Davis, Miss Georgia, (4) Nadia Mejia, Miss California and (5) Peyton Brown, Miss Alabama.

She’s not only an army offier, she’s also an I.T. specialist for the federal government. More specifically, she’s an I.T. analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce.
