The Baltimore Sun reports that Michael Phelps laughed during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” When the song started, the swimmer looked like he was about to cry. That changed, once he heard something all too familiar. According to RMNB the Olympian was laughing because someone yelled “O” during the national anthem.
After the swimmer won his 20th gold medal he was extremely emotional. For an athlete who had just introduced the most intense stare known to mankind, it was awkward seeing him in such a vulnerable state. In the matter of moments, the Flying Fish’s facial expression completely changed:

The Baltimore native later explained that him and his friend always yell “O” for the Baltimore Orioles when the national anthem is performed. You have to love the city boy for keeping it real. He brought his Maryland roots with him to Rio and that’s what it’s all about. Humor is acceptable when representing your country at the highest level.
At times, it’s important to laugh at life’s realities. Winning your 20th and 21st gold medals, with your family and friends in attendance, is one of those moments where laughter is a perfectly acceptable response. A day without laughter is a day wasted.
