Where Was Queen Sugar Filmed?

Queen Sugar was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey chose a perfect location considering the fact that the Bordelon family lives in Louisiana on the show.  Actually, Ralph Angel and Nova lived in New Orleans whereas Charley moved back from Los Angeles after finding out that her husband cheated on her and her father passed away.

Indie Wire reports that the show’s creator, Ava DuVernay took a leap of faith and hired an all female directing team.  It can be very difficult for females and minorities to secure directing positions in today’s entertainment industry.  Networks and showrunners often require previous experience yet how can they expect minority women to have previous experience in an industry that refuses to offer them opportunities?

Ava has been spending more time with Oprah lately, an icon that has also broken numerous barriers.  Queen Sugar airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network which Winfrey launched in 2011.  Oprah is the first black woman to own a television network and shows like Greenleaf and Queen Sugar make it clear that she’s here to stay!

One thing we love about the series is all the new actors it has introduced.  These talented stars may not have received an opportunity to show off their skills if it wasn’t for Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay.  Make sure you tune in next Wednesday after you watch the season 3 premiere of Empire!
