Brother Love – Puff Daddy Name Change Timeline

In the Instagram post below, Diddy explains that he has changed his name to Love aka Brother Love. The music mogul reminds us that you can reinvent yourself as many times as you wish.  He announced the change on his 48th birthday.  Like Snoop Dogg, it’s getting difficult to keep up with all Sean’s names.

1969: Sean John Combs

Sean John Combs was born on November 4, 1969.  He grew up in Harlem, New York and was raised by his mother.  Sadly, Sean’s father was murdered when Sean was 5-years-old.

1975: Puff

In his youth, Sean earned the nickname “Puff” because when he was mad he would huff and puff.  We see glimpses of Sean’s temper on social media.  Anytime there’s injustice, Puff is always one of the first celebrities to speak up.

1997: Puff Daddy

In 1997, Puff added Daddy to his name and started going by Puff Daddy.  He reinvented himself, transforming from a producer to a rapper.  His first single, “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” was a hit along with his debut album, No Way Out.

1998: Sean John

In 1998, Sean launched his fashion company Sean John.  Nearly two decades later, the company continues to enjoy success.  Jussie Smollett was recently named the face of the company’s Fall collection.

1999: Puffy

In 1999, Sean changed his name from Puff to Puffy.  The name change was never made official like many of Sean’s other name changes and it didn’t last for very long.

2001: P. Diddy

He made the name change after he was found to guilty of a possession of a weapon charge in connection to a 1999 shooting.  Sean’s former Bad Boy Records artist, Shyne, served 9 years in prison after being convicted of assault in connection to the shooting.

2001: Poppadiddypop

In his 2001 video for “Bad Boy 4 Life” actor Ben Stiller called Sean “Poppadiddypop” after knocking on his door to complain about a golf ball that Sean hit through the window of his house.

2005: Diddy

To clear up confusion, on August 16, 2005, Sean announced that he was changing his name to Diddy. He was sued by a London-based DJ and he isn’t allowed to use the name Diddy in the United Kingdom.

2008: King Combs

Sean’s son, Christian, goes by “King” and in 2008, Sean announced that he was changing his name to King.  The name change came the same year Sean announced his new fragrance, “I Am King.”

2011: Swag

On May 19, 2011, the Bad Boy Records founder changed his name to Swag.  He chose to make the name change in honor of his comeback.  Singer, Ray J is also seen in the video.  Swag says that he was only changing his name for a week.

2017: Love aka Brother Love

On the music mogul’s 48th birthday he announced that he was changing his name to Love aka Brother Love.  He explains that he’s been praying and knew it would be risky but he’s not the person he was before.  Brother Love says that he will no longer answer to “Puffy”, “Diddy”, “Puff Daddy” or any of his other names.
