Bryshere Y. Gray did a magnificent job as Michael Bivins in The New Edition Story.  The talented actor loved playing Bivins but he explained that he no longer wants to play music-related characters.  The Empire star wants to prove that he’s talented enough to play any role.  It will be difficult for some directors to see beyond Hakeem Lyon.

Taraji P. Henson played mathematician, Katherine Johnson in the biographical film, Hidden Figures.  The movie was the most important role of Henson’s career.  For years, directors told Henson that she was too street for many roles.  Taraji is from Washington, D.C. and she keeps it real.  Bryshere is from Philadelphia, PA an urban area, like D.C.


Gray wants to prove that he can play a role that doesn’t involve music.  In 2001, Henson played Yvette in Baby Boy.  The role was a gift and a curse.  Many people loved her in the movie but some people couldn’t imagine her playing a different role.  Tyrese Gibson played Jody in the movie and he landed a role in Fast and Furious two years later.  Gray is hoping to follow a trajectory like Gibson’s.
