Are you struggling to keep up? Don’t worry — we’ve got all the news you need right here so you won’t fall behind when it comes to all the Empire talk among friends.

Here’s what you need to know below.

  • First things first: The official Season 3 trailer is out (above).
  • Mariah Carey is guest-starring on Empire as Kitty, a singer who works with Jamal and Cookie on a new duet. [TV Guide]
  • Taye Diggs has been cast as Cookie’s maybe love interest, because he’s Taye Freakin’ Diggs. He’ll be playing a Barack Obama-inspired character named Angelo Dubois, a New York councilman with a Harvard law degree and a wealthy family background (sound familiar?). [Entertainment Weekly]
  • Phylicia Rashad has been cast to play Angelo’s mom Diana, which I’m taking to mean that we’ll be seeing a lot of Angelo and his family — and so will Cookie. [Playbill]
  • Morocco Omari, who plays Tariq Cousins, will be a series regular. If you remember, Tariq was revealed to be Lucious’ half-brother. [The Hollywood Reporter]

  • The season will have more flashbacks, but this time they’ll be of Cookie and Lucious’ younger days. “What I love about this season in particular are the flashbacks,” Taraji P. Henson (Cookie) said. “You really get to learn more about where Cookie comes from.” [WSVN]

And finally, the official Fox episode description for Sept. 21st’s season premiere:

“EMPIRE picks up exactly where Season Two ended – Hakeem left at the altar, Lucious and Anika married and Anika and Rhonda fighting on the roof – until someone falls. Also, Lucious pursues his music legacy with his streaming service, while clashing with his half-brother, Tariq (Morocco Omari), who is leading a federal task force investigating him in the all-new “Light in Darkness” Season Premiere episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, Sept. 21 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.” [CarterMatt]
