‘Empire’ Reference In The New Justin Bieber Album

I can’t believe I’m about to admit this, but I was listening to the new Justin Bieber album Purpose. It’s actually pretty good. While I was listening to the song “No Pressure” featuring Big Sean, I noticed not one, but two familiar names from Empire. I was so shocked, I had to run the song back and listen to it again. And indeed, Big Sean included a reference to Empire in his rap during the Bieber song.

Here’s the proof, aka the lyrics I’m referring to.

Oh, you know I eat the Cookie like I’m Lucious
Go ahead and take the time
But it’s a waste of time if your waist ain’t on mine
Think about it

Whoa, now! That sounds very suggestive. It’s more likely that Big Sean is using the show to reference something, ahem, sexual. Cookie doesn’t necessarily mean our Queen of One-Liners, does it?

But Lucious is definitely referring to the one and only Lucious Lyon from Empire. Aside from how risque the lyric is, how cool is it that the show has permeated pop culture so much that the show is now making it into Justin Bieber songs? This actually makes me like the Biebs way more.

“No Pressure” is the third collaboration between Bieber and Big Sean. They’ve also collaborated on the songs “As Long As You Love Me” and “Memphis” on the Biebs’ previous album Journals. Bieber has also worked with Skrillex and Diplo this year with successful results. Could an Empire collaboration be in his or Big Sean’s future? I hope so. Imagine Cookie meeting Bieber. It would be epic.
