Lucious Lyon
While we’re quick to ridicule everything Terrence and Lucious do we show up every Wednesday the show airs to make sure we keep an eye on both addicting characters.  We hate how he treats his kids and how he assaults his wife yet our disapproval has never been more supportive.
Scarface Tony Montana

Terrence Howard has that Tony Montana, all the confident evil our hearts desire.  As Tony explains:
“What you lookin’ at? You all a bunch of fuckin’ assholes.  You know why? You don’t have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me.  You need people like me so you can point your fuckin’ fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.” So…what that make you? Good? You’re not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie.  Me, I don’t have that problem.  Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie.  So say good night to the bad guy! Come on.  The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you.  Come on.  Make way for the bad guy.  There’s a bad guy comin’ through! Better get outta his way!”

Howard says that he will share Terryology after his work is patented.  The actor believes that his theory will change the future of math.  As our other favorite bad guy proclaims, “The world is yours.”

You control your life! Your future, your world, is YOURS.  For Howard this meant emancipating himself from his parents and moving to New York City to pursue his acting career.  Terrence further reminds us that we were brought here and our journeys belong to us therefore we can do what we wish.
Terrence’s world includes his very own language, what have you done with your world? Terrence’s world includes his very own language, what have you created in yours? You are only granted one life in this world and it is all yours therefore make the most out of it!

Howard knows that success doesn’t come find you, you have to go out and get it.  It took Craig Brewer three years to get the financing to make the film so Howard used the time wisely, talking to pimps and prostitutes, researching their life stories in order to effectively communicate the story of a Memphis pimp struggling to become a rapper.

Terrence Howard Iron Man

Don Cheadle played Rhodey in Iron Man 2 leading rumors to fly.  Howard explains: “It turns out that the person I helped become Iron Man…when it was time to re-up for the second one, he took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.”

“We did a three-picture deal, so that means that you did the deal ahead of time.  It was going to be a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second one, a certain amount for the third.  They came to me with the second one and said, ‘Look we will pay you one-eight of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call he back for three months.”

Tony Montana Scarface

Lucious Lyon is cut from the same cloth as Tony, not hesitating to destroy anyone who threatens his Empire.  All Lucious has is his balls and his words and he don’t break them for no one! Similar to Montana’s strategic rise to the top Lucious uses his old street contacts to distribute his product.

Lucious Lyon Empire

Money, power and then women, or “thots” as Lucious would say, that’s what it’s all about as the founder and former CEO of Empire attempts to regain control of his empire.  Tony and Lucious want what’s coming to them: “The world and everything in it.”

Lucious and Bunkie
Marcus “Bunkie” Williams (Antoine McKay) is Cookie’s cousin and Lucious’ bodyguard.  Bunkie has a gambling problem and threatens to burn down Lucious’ empire if he doesn’t help him pay off $3 million in gambling debts.

Lucious kills Bunkie and when police investigate the incident Vernon (Malik Yoba) has to identify his body.  Lucious lies to Hakeem about murdering Bunkie yet he tells Vernon the truth.  Vernon has a very hard time dealing with the fact that Lucious killed Bunkie and ultimately turns to drugs in an attempt to get over it.

Cookie Lucious Bunkie Empire

Similar to Lucious, Tony Montana is known for handling problems the wrong way, often overeating to seemingly mild problems.  Montana kills his best friend Manny Ribera after finding out that Manny had fallen in love with his sister.  Manny was right by Tony’s side every step of the way as the drug lords rose to the top of the cocaine business in Miami.

Lucious and Bunkie grew up together.  Lucious ask Bunkie to spy on Cookie but Bunkie refuses and attempts to blackmail Lucious, demanding $3 million to pay off his gambling debts.  Bunkie threatens to snitch on Lucious by informing the cops that Lucious had murdered several drug dealers years prior.  Lucious murders Bunkie, shooting his right hand man in the head.

Lucious Kills Bunkie Empire

Tony ultimately hurts the love of his life, his kid sister, Gina.  Lucious hurts the only woman he has ever truly loved, Cookie.  Although Cookie has been unable to prove it Lucious confessed to murdering Bunkie while he was high on medication, leading Cookie to nearly suffocate him with a pillow.

Lucious and Vernon
Vernon Turner (Malik Yoba) is Lucious’ business partner in Empire’s first season.  Vernon had a drug problem and when times at Empire became difficult he turned to drugs.

Vernon, Lucious and Bunkie grew up together and Vernon has a difficult time accepting the fact that Lucious killed Bunkie.  When Vernon is on drugs it is very difficult to predict his actions.

Lucious and Vernon Empire

Vernon helps Reg and Olivia by taking them to Lucious’ house.  This almost left Lucious dead but luckily Malcolm save the day!  Rhonda kills Vernon in an attempt to protect Andre.  The two are fighting and Rhonda hits him over the head.
Andre and Rhonda dig up Vernon to save Lucious.  Lucious and Thirsty catch them digging Vernon up and end up delivering the dead body to Roxanne Ford.

Lucious and Cookie
Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) is Lucious’ ex-wife and the mother of his three sons.  Lucious has put Cookie through the absolute most! When Cookie gets locked up he doesn’t visit her.  As a result the former couple’s youngest son Hakeem was unable to build a relationship with his mother.

In the show’s first season Cookie has her eyes on Empire’s head of security, Malcolm DeVeaux, and Lucious is with Anika.  Despite their situations the two still manage to find time to reconnect.  After Cookie finds out about Lola she drops Lucious like he is hot!

Lucious and Cookie Empire

In the show’s second season Cookie has yet another boy toy, Laz (Adam Rodriguez) a promoter for her record label Lyon Dynasty.  The relationship doesn’t last thanks to Lucious who informs Cookie that Laz is actually a member of the 125th Street Bulls, the crew who kidnaps Hakeem.
Lucious and Cookie have been through it all.  Cookie attempted to express their deep connection to Hakeem yet their youngest son still chose to vote Lucious out the company.  When Lucious and Cookie get together empires are created and they have no choice but to reconnect in order to regain control of Empire.

Lucious and Anika
Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey) aka Boo Boo Kitty is Lucious’ love interest in the show’s first season.  The two are planning to get married before Cookie gets home and ruins everything!

Lucious and Anika Empire

Lucious and Baretti
Billy Baretti (Judd Nelson) is the CEO of Creedmoor Records.  Baretti and Lucious have a past that nearly leaves one of the moguls to an early grave.  Anika briefly joins Creedmoor after she is betrayed by Lucious.

Empire Trash Can Scene
In Empire’s first season a flashback shows Jamal wearing heels and a scarf.  When Lucious sees his son he picks him up, takes him outside and put him in a trash can.  Cookie runs out after Lucious and takes Jamal out the trash can.

Empire Trash Can Scene Lucious Jamal

Lucious and Jamal
Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) is Lucious’ middle son.  In the show’s initial season Lucious and Jamal go through major difficulties with Lucious being homophobic.  Despite their disagreements Lucious names Jamal as his successor and the second season begins with Jamal in control.

Jamal visits Lucious while he is locked up and he was there when Lucious first meets Thirsty.  Despite their past, Lucious and Jamal have developed a strong bond.  When Jamal hooks up with Skye Summers Lucious is happy but Jamal assures his father that he is still gay.

Lucious and Jamal Empire

Lucious and Jamal begin working on music together in the show’s second season.  Lucious is partly responsible for the song that lands Jamal his deal with Pepsi.  Jamal merges input from Lucious and Cookie to create the perfect track.

Hakeem’s corporate takeover couldn’t have come at a worst time for Lucious and Jamal’s relationship.  The two were creating a deep bond but Mimi’s big moves changed everything! Now that Hakeem is Empire’s new leader the smartest thing Jamal can do is join Lyon Dynasty.

Lucious and Andre
Andre Lyon (Trai Byers) is Lucious’ oldest son.  In Empire’s first season we see Andre struggle with his mental health condition.  Andre handles the financial aspects of his father’s company but he hopes to lead the company one day.

Andre is Lucious’ only son that is not an entertainer therefore he often feels like Lucious does not love him the way that he loves Jamal and Hakeem.  Andre is Lucious’ only son that knows that he murdered Bunkie, for sure.

Lucious and Andre Empire

In Empire’s second season, Andre joins his mother and Hakeem to create Lyon Dynasty but realizes that he belongs at Empire Entertainment.  Lucious makes it difficult for Andre to rejoin the company until Andre is able to provide his father with something no one else could.

Andre proves his worth in gold when Lucious and Thirsty catch him and Rhonda digging up his Uncle Vernon’s body.  Lucious was looking forward to Andre and Rhonda’s child, his first grandchild, yet we will soon find out if the baby survived Rhonda’s fall.

Lucious and Hakeem
Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Y. Gray) is Lucious’ youngest son.  In the show’s first season Hakeem is signed to Empire, often complaining about the amount of attention Jamal’s career receives.

Although Hakeem is immature Lucious sees himself in Hakeem.  Jamal is not Lucious’ cup of team and Andre has a health condition that reminds Lucious of his mother’s disorder.

Lucious and Hakeem Empire

After his attempts at a hostile takeover fail, Hakeem teams up with Cookie to help her create Lyon Dynasty.  This hurts Lucious who attempts to persuade Hakeem to return to Empire on multiple occasions throughout the show’s second season.

Hakeem is now in control of the company his father built and he is looking forward to taking Empire to the next level.  It will be interesting to see if Lucious decides to join forces with Cookie at Lyon Dynasty.

Lucious v. Camilla
Camilla Marks (Naomi Campbell) is Hakeem’s love interest in Empire’s first season.  Hakeem is happy with Camilla in the show’s first season.  Although he has a brief relationship with Tiana Camilla is his true bae.

Camilla and Hakeem share their love with the Lyon family at Lucious’ mansion when Hakeem delivers the song devoted to their relationship, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number”.  Despite Hakeem’s feelings both Lucious and Cookie hate Camilla.

Lucious and Camilla Empire

Cookie wants grandkids and Lucious doesn’t trust Yoko’s intentions leading him to bribe out of his son’s life.  Empire fans hadn’t heard from Camilla since the show’s first season yet that all changed as she appeared in show’s midseason finale.

Camilla returns to Empire and reveals that Mimi is actually her wife.  Once Mimi gains control of Empire she transfers the label to Camilla who names Hakeem the label’s new CEO.

Lucious and Mimi
Mimi Whiteman (Marisa Tomei) is a lesbian billionaire in the second season of Empire.  Mimi is a venture capitalist who loves hip-hop.  Lucious first spots Mimi while he is locked up.

Cookie invites Mimi to the Free Lucious concert in order to discuss her plans for Empire’s future.  First Mimi fools Cookie after she joins forces with Lucious, enabling him to maintain control of Empire Entertainment.  Then she reveals that she was never on Lucious’ side and she is actually the wife of Camilla.

Lucious and Mimi Empire

Mimi calls a board meeting where she is able to gather enough votes to have Lucious ousted as Empire’s CEO.  While Lucious thought the billionaire could be trusted she was working for Camilla the entire time.
After Lucious bribed Camilla, Yoko clearly went to work and has managed to transfer Empire to her bae Hakeem.  In the show’s previews Cookie states, “We did what we had to do.” Considering Mimi’s recent actions we’re guessing the billionaire will feel the impact of that statement in some shape or form.

Gutter Life Records
Gutter Life Records was a defunct label that Lucious decides to revive as a division of Empire.  Lucious made the move while attempting to sign Freda Gatz, Frank Gather’s daughter.

Lucious makes Andre Gutter Life’s president and Titan Becky Williams the label’s A&R.  Gutter Life’s roster currently includes Freda Gatz, Titan, Crank Master, P Busta and J Poppa.

Gutter Life Records Empire

Andre believes that Lucious names him the president because he has found God.  Despite Gutter Life’s negative them Andre has already developed a positive relationship with one of the label’s artist, J Poppa.

J Poppa is also Becky Williams love interest.  After finding out that the J in J Poppa is for “Job” as in the Book of Job (one of the Writings in the Hebrew Bible) Andre knows he has found someone he can relate to.

Lucious and Frank
Frank Gathers (Chris Rock) was a drug lord who Lucious and Cookie worked for in the 90s.  Frank is transferred to the same prison as Lucious and Jermel (Cookie’s cousin).  Jermel asks Lucious to protect him but Lucious refuses.  Jermel tells Frank that Cookie is the one that snitch on him.

In “Dangerous Bonds” A flashback of a drug deal gone wrong is shown and Gathers is seen killing a man.  The drug deal was ambushed by the FBI and Cookie realizes that the murder victim was an undercover agent.

Lucious and Frank Empire

Cookie’s testimony was used as proof that Frank Gather’s killed a federal agent therefore he was denied parole.  Agent Harlow Carter set Cookie up and although she may not have known it, on the streets Cookie would be considered a “Snitch Bitch”.

When Cookie realizes what she has done she turns to Lucious who is locked up with Gathers.  In “The Devils Are Here” Lucious kills Gathers to protect Cookie.  Gathers thinks that fellow inmates would murder Lucious for him yet Lucious had already devised a more strategic plan.

Lucious and Freda
Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) is a rapper Lucious signs to Gutter Life Records.  Freda and Lucious team up on the song Boom Boom Boom Boom which received an ASA nomination for Song of the Year.

Initially, Lucious has a difficult time attempting to lure Freda off the streets.  When Lucious and Thirsty visit the rapper’s hood they witness her nearly shoot an opposing rapper in a freestyle battle.  Lucious is eventually able to convince the young artist that life on the streets is too dangerous.

Lucious and Freda Empire

In “My Bad Parts” Freda and Hakeem go head to head in a freestyle battle set up by Lucious Lyon.  Freda’s rhymes are dope yet she is unable to keep up with Hakeem who follows Jamal’s advice ultimately dropping his last name.

Despite the fact that Lucious has three boys he is able to relate to Freda better than he is able to relate to any of his children.  Lucious’ daughter Lola is too young at the moment but we are sure Lucious will be able to maintain a similar relationship with her considering the ups and downs she has already experience in her young life.

Lucious Lyon Mother
Leah Walker (Kelly Rowland) is Lucious Lyon’s mother in the second season of Empire.  Leah struggled through bipolar disorder and Lucious was only nine when she committed suicide.

The show’s flashbacks of Lucious’ mother help explain why Lucious treats Andre different than Jamal Hakeem.  After Lucious witnessed a family member with the same condition commit suicide he fears Andre’s potential actions.

Lucious and His Mother, Leah Walker Empire

In “True Love Never” Lucious hides the bullets to his mother’s gun and she rips through her apartment until she finds one.  Leah then loads the gun, puts it to her head and shouts “Boom! Boom! Boom!”

Flashbacks that show Lucious’ past help us make sense of his actions as an adult.  How can a man that watched his mother commit suicide be expected to lead a family without substantial assistance?

Lucious Lyon Quotes
Lucious Lyon has a way with words.  No matter what Lucious does he always has a brilliant excuse to cover his ass! Similar to Tony Montana, Lucious has built a reputation for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time (“She fixed you”) yet the former CEO of Empire also shares some of the show’s most valuable lessons.

Lucious Lyon Real Name

Lucious Lyon’s real name is Dwight Walker.  The former leader of Empire Entertainment shared his government name with his son Jamal in the finale of the show’s first season.  Lucious changed his name from Dwight Walker to Lucious Lyon when he was younger.  He chose the name Lyon because he used to sleep under a lion statue when he was younger.

Lucious Lyon Arrested

Lucious’ team may hate him but the first episode of the show’s second season proves that Lucious’ name rings bells! While most of us would be happy to get visitors if we found ourselves behind bars, Lucious Lyon received the Empire-treatment during his time his prison.

Free Lucious Empire

Empire’s second season begins with Lucious behind bars so a “Free Lucious” concert was held inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Lucious attempts to run Empire from the inside while Cookie begins making moves in hopes of taking over the company.
Everyone comes out to show their support including Reverend Al Sharpton, CNN anchor Don Lemon and former president Bill Clinton.  Lucious is able to see the concert from jail and spots Mimi who he ends up teaming up with leading Cookie and crew’s hostile takeover plans to fail.

Lucious Lyon Lawyer
Thurston “Thirsty” Rawlings (Andre Royo) plays Lucious’ lawyer in the second season of Empire.  In “Without a Country” Thirsty meets with Lucious in jail in a bright purple suit that Jamal finds confusing.

Jamal asks Thirsty which law school he attended and Thirsty says the “University of Guam”.  Lucious hires Thirsty and the lawyer is able to have Lucious’ meds delivered and arranges 65 minutes for the inmate to record a song (Snitch Bitch).

Thirsty and Lucious Empire

Tony Montana’s corrupt lawyer was George Sheffield while Lucious’ is Thirsty.  Thirsty proves just how shady he is by having his goons handle Office McKnight (Ludacris).  Thirsty was able to acquire incriminating photos of Lucious’ judge leading the judge to lower Lucious’ bail and he was released on $1 million bond.
Thirsty is the corrupt lawyer that In “Poor Yorick” Thirsty warns Lucious that the F.B.I. was on their way to raid Lucious’ house buying Lucious just enough time to take off his clothes in preparation for his face-to-face with Roxanne Ford.  The crooked lawyer also helped Lucious arrange the unforgettable meeting between Vernon and Roxanne.

Lucious v. Shyne
Rapper Xzibit will play Leslie “Shyne” Johnson on Empire’s second season.  As if Lucious didn’t already have enough problems, Xzibit’s character has beef with Lucious and wants his revenge.

Lucious may have lost his first grandchild, his youngest son has voted him out of his company and he thought he told Yoko not to come back! Just when you thought things couldn’t get worst for Lucious, Xzibit (Alvin Joiner) joins the cast to make life for Lucious Lyon even worst!

Xzibit Terrence Howard

Similar to Lucious Shyne is from the streets.  The rapper manages numerous artists and has sold a large amount of units himself.  While he has enjoyed some success in the music industry Shyne’s roots prove that he’s about that gutter life.

The rapper has been around guns and drugs his entire life similar to Frank Gathers who Lucious handled earlier this season.  Lucious may not have his coveted position as Empire’s CEO yet Shyne has witnessed the respect he has received from media moguls over the years and he believes that he deserves similar treatment.

Jimpire

NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon delivered one of the most hilarious Empire parodies to date with Jimmy as Lucious Lyon in “Jimpire”.  To make the parody perfect both Lucious and Cookie showed up!

Steve Higgins and Cookie Lyon went blow for blow! We absolutely loved the announcer’s Cookie ensemble.  You gotta love Jimmy’s chic purple paisley scarf and the way he has all the right words exactly like Lucious Lyon.

Jimmy is attempting to choose a successor to continue his comedy legacy and he gives Questlove, Tariq and Andre an opportunity to prove their worth.  Jimmy’s half Lucious half Tony Stark impression was simply the best!

Jimmy Fallon is welcomed back to the Lyon’s Den anytime he wishes and we are hoping he creates additional Empire-related content in the VERY near future.  Fallon shares a great relationship with Taraji P. Henson who appears on the show on a consistent basis.
