Maarib Al Hishmawi is the 16-year-old who was beaten by her parents, Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi for refusing to agree to an arranged marriage. Jezebel reports that Maarib’s parents refused to take no for an answer and resorted to violence when their daughter disobeyed them.
Maarib’s Parents Threw Hot Cooking Oil On Her
Abdulah Fahmi, 34 and Hamdiyah Saha, 33 allegedly threw hot cooking oil on Maarib, their 16-year-old daughter. They beat her and choked her until she was nearly unconscious. In late January, the Texas parents reported that Maarib ran away from home. She was found in March of 2018. Maarib was taken in by an organization that was helping her after she ran away.
Maarib’s Parents Agreed To The Arranged Marriage For $20,000
In 2017, Maarib’s parents told her that they found a man for her to marry. They advised their daughter that she would have to move to another city to marry her new husband. Maarib refused and that’s when the abuse started.
To make her parents stop beating her, Maarib agreed to the arranged marriage. While her parents trusted her, Maarib was planning to run away from home. On January 30, 2018, Maarib left Taft High School in San Antonio, Texas and joined an organization that protected her from her abusive parents.
Maarib And Her 5 Siblings Are In Child Protective Services
Maarib has since been placed in child protective services. She is one of the Al Hishmawi’s 6 children. Maarib’s youngest sibling is 5 and her oldest is 15. They are all in the custody of child protective services.
