Queen Sugar Ratings

Queen Sugar, the highly-anticipated, one-hour weekly drama series from executive producer, Oprah Winfrey and director Ava DuVernay premiered on Tuesday night.  One night wasn’t enough for the new OWN series, which has already been renewed for a second season.  On Wednesday, September 7, episode 2, of the show’s first season aired.  The series will regularly air on Wednesday nights at 10 pm ET/PT, a great choice with Empire airing on Wednesday nights at 9 pm ET/PT.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a rating of 91%, based on 34 reviews, with an average rating of 7.4/10.  The Huffington Post reports that the show’s first episode earned heavy praises online.  Actress, Gabrielle Union, was blown away, describing the show as “perfection.”

Gerrick D. Kennedy, of the Los Angeles Times, also praised the series, calling it brilliant, heart wrenching and beautiful.

The show chronicles the lives of the Bordelon siblings: Nova, Charley and Ralph Angel.  Nova is a journalist and activist in an interracial relationship.  She is the oldest of the three.  Charley is wife and manager to an NBA superstar who was involved in a sex scandal.  Ralph Angel is a formerly incarcerated single-father who is still willing to break the law.

Queen Sugar airs on Wednesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on OWN.
