What Is The Show Empire About?
The Empire TV show’s cast includes numerous talented actors that have shown broadcast networks the power of appealing directly to African American viewers.  Empire is a drama that explores the hip hop music industry through the Lyon family as they fight for control of the company.

Lucious Lyon, former drug dealer who has since become a musical mogul, is on a mission to appoint one of his sons successor of Empire Entertainment after he finds out about his terminal illness.  In the show’s first season Lucious’ sons, Andre, Jamal and Hakeem each try to prove that they are fit to lead the company.

While Lucious and his sons plan Empire’s future, Lucious’ ex-wife Cookie is released from prison.  Cookie served 17 years in prison for selling drugs.  She was sent to prison for her role in a drug deal worth $400,000, the money that was used to start Empire Entertainment.

    Empire Season One Ratings
Empire’s first season was simply amazing as the show shattered numerous records.  In its initial season Empire became the first show to increase viewers every week during its freshman season since at least the 1990s when Nielsen began tracking such information.  Empire’s season finale drew 16.5 million viewers and averaged a 6.5 rating among the adult under 50 demographic.

    Cookie Lyon Takeover

USA Today named Taraji P. Henson Entertainer of the Year for her role as Cookie Lyon.  Henson spent years in numerous one-dimensional roles that did not allow her to show off her talent.  From Cookie’s one-liners to her one-of-a-kind wardrobe the world has never experienced a character as unique and unpredictable.

In the show’s first season we watched Cookie and Lucious nearly get back together and we also saw Cookie and Malcom’s brief relationship.  Empire season 2 has been crazy for Cookie! Her boyfriend Laz (Adam Rodriguez) turned out to be a member of the 125th St. Bulls so Lucious had to take care of him!

    The Fall of Lucious Lyon

When the show returns Lucious will have yet another opponent, rapper Xzibit has been added to Empire’s cast.  The former host of West Coast Customs will play Leslie ‘Shyne’ Johnson, a gangster who hates Lucious.

The TV show Empire is always surprising viewers with plot twists and unpredictable moments.  In the show’s midseason finale Hakeem’s ex-girlfriend Camilla returns and we find out that she is actually Mimi’s wife!? Mimi convinces Empire’s board of directors to vote to boot Lucious from the company and Camilla appoints Hakeem as Empire’s new leader.

    Empire 2016 Premiere Hakeem
    Empire 2016 Premiere Hakeem
Hakeem, Leader of the New School
Hakeem has made such a major impact on hip-hop that rumors have suggested that he is Jay-Z’s son.  These rumors were false of course yet similar to Jay-Z, Hakeem works with Timbaland in order to deliver classic tracks.  In the show’s first season Hakeem delivered the track “Drip Drop”, helping the show become more popular as we couldn’t stop singing the song!

TV Show Empire Hakeem Freda Rap Battle
TV Show Empire Hakeem Freda Rap Battle

Freda and Hakeem’s rap battle was one of Empire season 2’s best moments, as Hakeem showed off his lyrical arsenal and ultimately gave Lucious back his last name.  As Empire’s new leader Hakeem may not be able to find time for anymore battles.  Hakeem’s older brother Jamal experienced major difficulties in his attempt to lead Empire and create music.  It will be interesting to see how Hakeem treats Jamal now that he is his boss.

    Empire 2016 Premiere Jamal
    Empire 2016 Premiere Jamal

    Jamal, Ready to Go!
Jamal Lyon went from recording music at “Ghetto Ass Studios” to being featured in epic commercials as the new face of Pepsi.  In one of the most enjoyable Empire-moments to date Jamal Lyon has a coming-out moment while he is performing a song and Lucious’ reaction is pure comedy:

    Lucious Lyon Empire

While Jamal is performing, flashbacks of Lucious putting him in a trashcan are shown.  The powerful scene emphasizes the fact that Jamal has moved forward with his life despite Lucious being stuck in the past.

The Empire TV show’s second season began with Jamal as Empire’s CEO struggling to balance his career as an artist and leading the company.  Jamal and Michael break up and Hakeem is now in charge of Empire creating the perfect opportunity for Jamal to focus on what he does best: creating unforgettable music.

    Andre, Beautiful Mind
Now that Hakeem is Empire’s CEO Andre is the only Lyon brother that has never led the company.  Andre Lyon is a business savvy professional that we watch overcome health conditions, bury his uncle and we even get to see Lucious and Cookie’s oldest son get served with a bib!

Andre is baptized in the show’s second season yet his desire to transform his life may be delayed with his wife Rhonda being pushed down the stairs of their home at the end of the Empire TV show’s midseason finale.

Anika, You Will Never Be a Lyon

When we first meet Anika Calhoun she is Lucious Lyon’s lover and they are both very anxious to get married.  After she catches Lucious having sex with Cookie, Anika leaves Lucious, hooks up with Hakeem and even joins Creedmoor Records.

    Empire TV Show Fight

From fighting Cookie to having sex with Mimi, Empire’s Boo Boo Kitty has shown that she will do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals.  While the new CEO of Empire, Hakeem, has assured Anika that she will never be a Lyon he was not aware of the fact that she was pregnant with their baby!
    Black Girl Named Becky
Becky Williams (Gabourey Sidibe) was Lucious’ assistant during his time at Empire Entertainment.  After Lucious names Jamal his successor Jamal promote Becky to A&R.

When Lucious creates Gutter Life Records Becky works in the A&R department of the new label.  The position is perfect for Becky allowing her to work alongside her love interest J Poppa.

    Porsha, Taxes!?
Porsha Taylor (Ta’Rhonda Jones) is Cookie’s assistant.  In Empire’s first season, Anika pays Porsha to spy on Cookie but Porsha makes it clear that she wasn’t having it: “And I spied right back on your ass!”

Cookie fires Porsha for telling cops that her name is “Cookie Lyon” when she is caught jumping a subway turnstile.  Then, Porsha shows up to Cookie’s office with her Grandma’s mut, Whoopty Whoo and is able to convince Cookie to give her another chance.

    Blame It On Tiana
Tiana Brown (Serayah McNeill) is an artist that was previously signed to Empire Entertainment and is currently signed to Lyon Dynasty.  Tiana and Hakeem are a couple in the show’s first season but the two part ways after Hakeem finds out that Tiana has a girlfriend.

Hakeem and Tiana have remained good friends.  Hakeem reaches out to Tiana when he needs help transforming his girlfriend (Laura Calleros) into a star and Tiana is happy to assist.  We wonder if Tiana will end up back at Empire Entertainment with Hakeem.

Rhonda Lyon (Kaitlin Doubleday) is Andre’s wife.  At one point everything seemed to be perfect between Lucious, Andre and Rhonda.  Despite Lucious making

While many Empire fans believe Anika pushed Rhonda down the stairs the show is always delivering surprises making it more difficult to guess #WhoPushedRhonda.

    A Star Attraction
While some have complained about the Empire’s large number of guest stars I absolutely love it! The first season featured some of the industry’s most familiar faces, including Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Cuba Gooding Jr. and even Gladys Knight!

    Alicia Keys
Empire’s second season has also included numerous unforgettable guest stars.  Alicia Keys appeared on Empire as singer, Skye Summers.  Summers teamed up with Jamal Lyon for the song “Powerful”:

Taraji P. Henson and Jussie Smollett’s chemistry on Empire is amazing and their chemistry in real life is very similar.  The following video shows some of their most hilarious moments:

This one’s a bit late, but since Empire is a repeat this week, here’s a quick catchup for those who were busy during the spring holidays.

    • Lucious has some medical issues with his non-ALS condition and Anika tries to exploit it with some empty threats. Luckily, Lucifer Lyon has a gun by his side.
    • Andre continues to pursue ~Vegas~ and getting Empire a casino license in Sin City.
    • Jamal continues to work on his Cookie and Lucious album. Jamal releases a teaser for the album, and it causes waves for Cookie and Angelo’s relationship. She wants another teaser to show that Cookie and Lucious’ relationship eventually soured, but Jamal says no.
    • Anika wants Cookie to look after Bella if something happens to her.
    • Cookie/Lucious shippers in the show coin the term “Cucious,” which sounds SO dirty. Cookie agrees: “It sounds like a damn STD.”
    • Jamal tries to let D-Major down easy again.
    • Kennedy, fron Hakeem’s 21st birthday, faces off with Thirsty and her own attorney. Hakeem doesn’t speak up for her. “What is victim-blaming?” Hakeem asks and learns a lesson about his own behavior from Cookie and Jamal.
    • Hakeem then records a rap that supports women and pays tribute to his daughter. Aww.
    • Andre brings the Empire board to Lucious’ sick bed and pitches his idea about ~Vegas~ residencies. Lucious hates the idea and fires Andre, but no one else supports the idea, because they like his ideas. Also, Andre name drops The Weeknd and then The Weeknd’s “I Feel It Coming” plays in the next scene!
    • Lucious crashes Angelo’s election party. Angelo wins…the Democratic primary. Which means there’s more election to come.
    • Lucious plays a song at the party and Cookie flashes back to romantic memories with him. Then Guiliana approaches him and lets the audience know they were once romantically involved. Whoa!
  • ‘Empire’ Season 3 Recap: “Strange Bedfellows”

‘Empire’ Season 3 Recap: “Strange Bedfellows”

The episode begins with Hakeem waking up after an epic night of partying, boasting about how his 21st birthday is going to be an even more epic night of partying. (I can’t help but have a bad feeling about this.)  Hakeem skypes with Tiana, who is on tour and won’t be at the 21-hour club-hopping bash. He’s bummed that she won’t be there. (Again, I’ve got a bad feeling about this.) It’s going to be streamed live on Empire Xtreme, which Andre is pissed about.

Tiana winds up showing up, but Hakeem has words with the club manager about his appearance fee. At Leviticus, everything seems to be going great. Jamal and Tiana serenade Hakeem, but then a fight breaks out at the club. Andre and Hakeem argue about it and then Andre bans Hakeem from Empire Xtreme. Hakeem heads to Lucious’ house to get Bella and spend the final moments of his birthday with his daughter, which impresses Lucious. Lucious tells Hakeem the story of his birth.

D-Major Facebook-lives his declaration of love to Jamal, but catches Jamal with another guy. Ouch. D-Major gets banned from Empire, because Cookie doesn’t like his influence over Jamal.

Leah has it out for Anika aka the “wife woman,” since she has disappeared. Hakeem is surprised to learn this. Anika returns and has a confrontation with Cookie and Lucious. And Leah, who wants to kill Anika. Boo Boo Kitty decides to start an affair with Tariq to discredit him, which is such an Anika thing to do.

Nia Long and Andre bond and flirt, talking about starting a business in Vegas. Cookie runs into Nia Long at the salon, and she takes Cookie’s hair appointment — and calls Cookie “trash.” Guiliana aka Nia Long flirt more and she tells him she won’t sleep with him unless Nessa says it’s ok, and he says it’s fine.

Angelo finds Cookie’s gun and gets upset, especially since it was a “gift” from Lucious. She pledges to get rid of it and all other gifts from Lucious.

  • ‘Empire’ Star Morocco Omari Arrested

    ‘Empire’ Star Morocco Omari Arrested

Well if you were left shook from last nights episode (I know you saw that crazy fight scene), be prepared for more crazy news.  Morocco Omari from “Empire” was arrested! That’s right, the actor who plays Tariq was arrested although he is that annoying FBI Agent that’s after the Lyons on screen.

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old woman called police accusing Omari of pushing her to the ground multiple times during an argument. The police showed up, saw the scratches on her neck and chest, and arrested Morocco. He was then booked for misdemeanor domestic battery. The incident occurred in Chicago where the show films and the woman identified herself as Morocco’s girlfriend. Yikes.

Morocco Omari is 46 and was previously married to JoNell Kennedy. He’s been acting many years and has had stints on shows like “Joan of Arcadia” and “The Good Wife” before landing a recurring role on “Empire”. He hasn’t been in the news many times for any incidences unrelated to work so I wonder how this will affect his career. He is scheduled to make an appearance in court today but his reps haven’t released a statement which may happen after court.

What do you think about the situation?

‘Empire’ Season 3, Episode 11 Recap: “Play On”

We pick up with Cookie’s remorse for trashing Lucious’ place, for kissing him, and for that time Lucious got her kicked out of her dad’s house — which included them having sex for the first time in a flashback. Cookie’s sister tells Cookie she better not go back to “Lucifer Lyon.” Cookie visits Angelo and he notices her bruises from her Lucious showdown. Angelo later confronts Lucious over Cookie’s parole.

Cookie goes to clear the air with Lucious, and walks in after Anika and Lucious have had sex. Oy. They argue about their feelings for each other and move on from each other. Later, Anika tries to comfort Becky about the A&R position, saying one day she will be ready for it, and lets her be in charge of a rehearsal.

At dinner, Cookie’s sister drops hints that Angelo and Cookie should have a proper wedding — and then there’s a flashback to Lucious and Cookie’s wedding (she’s pregnant with Andre, presumably).

Hakeem shows his support for Tiana at a dance rehearsal for her music video (directed by Hakeem), where he tries to get her to finally meet his daughter.  Tiana doesn’t want to, but the conversation gets interrupted when Leah Walker shows up, gets one of the dancers to distract her guard so she can sneak away, and urges Hakeem to marry Tiana. Anika makes Hakeem take Isbella for the day and thus Tiana finally comes face to face with the baby — and she enjoys it more than she thought she would.

Jamal works in the studio with Tory. Cookie advises them to “mess it up some more” and to not let Lucious know what they’re doing. But after some jamming, Jamal tells them not to wipe the hard drive clean. Uh oh. Of course, Cookie and Jamal find Lucious listening to Jamal’s track. There’s also a flashback to when Cookie told Lucious she was pregnant.

Tariq meets with Anika and Leah Walker. Will his investigation ever end?

Andre meets Danger (literally), who is an actual man. He goes deeper and meets other shady folks, including a character played by Nia Long.

Rumer Willis was the guest star on Empire tonight.  She plays Tory Ash on the Fox series.  The video at the end of this article shows Tory and Jamal deliver a powerful duet.  She is the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.  She was born on August 16, 1988 in Paducah, KY.  You may remember her from Dancing with the Stars.  Rumer was the winner of season 20.  She also managed to win Jamal Lyon’s heart in rehab.

Cookie and crew visit Jamal in rehab and we find out that he’s not allowed to work on music.  Tory and Jamal love music too much to let rehab keep them away.  They sneak away to a studio where they’re able to record a song.  Listen to the duet in the video at the end of this article.

Cookie Lyon does not want Jamal working with Freda Gatz because she found out about her father being Frank Gathers.  After Stacee Run Run doesn’t show up to record the song with Jamal, the singer opts to invite Freda Gatz back on the track but Freda isn’t too excited to do so.

In additional Empire news, Andre seems to be working with Lucious.  After Andre and Lucious visit Lucious’ mother’s grave, the two team up in order to ensure that Hakeem’s shareholder’s meeting is a disaster.

Jamal knows his mother far too well and ends up calling Cookie out regarding his song.  Jamal explains to Cookie that they are usually on the same page when it comes to music yet this song has been different.

Jamal won’t allow Cookie to continue to act in an abnormal manner without calling her out.  Will this lead to beef between Freda and the Lyon family? Will Hakeem ever be able to forgive Lucious?

‘Empire’ Season 3 Quick Recap: “Sound & Fury”

Finally, Empire has returned with a brand new episode! The episode opens at Lucious Lyon Inferno, which has fire batons and lots of tension in the Lyon family — especially when Leah Walker wanders onto the stage. Uh oh. And that’s just the beginning.

Here’s a quick rundown of the episode so you can get all caught up quickly.

    • Nessa gets chosen for another showcase, despite Hakeem and Cookie wanting Tiana for the job. At the showcase, Tiana and Nessa get into a cat fight, where Nessa literally throws Tiana off the stage.
    • Cookie and Angelo seem to be doing OK after the fallout of the revelation of the car accident from his past.
    • Andre, Cookie, Lucious, and Hakeem have a tense visit with Jamal in rehab. Jamal writes music in rehab with Tory (Rumer Willis). Jamal disappears from rehab, and goes to record with Tory in a studio.
    • Lucious endorses Angelo’s opponent, John Meeks. Ouch.
    • Xavier is the worst. He finally gets fired. Later, Xavier. But Anika gets to be head of A&R and Cookie is pissed.
    • Cookie takes a bat and smashes up the halls of Empire Entertainment, including gold records and Lucious’ piano. And then they make out on the piano, because this is Lucious and Cookie we’re talking about, but Cookie doesn’t let it go further than that.

‘Empire’ Lawsuit – Rita Grant Miller, Sophia Eggleston

    Empire Lawsuit Update
    Empire Lawsuit Update

“Empire” Screenwriter Rita Grant Miller has been in a lengthy battle to prove that she didn’t steal the show idea from real life (former) drug kingpin, or queenpin in this case, Sophia Eggleston. Sophia served Miller, Lee Daniels and Danny Strong (co-producers of the show), and Fox seeking out $300 million for being the real life Cookie Lyon in 2015.

Empire Lawsuit Rita Grant Miller Sophia Eggleston

Eggleston’s claim accused Miller for taking the book titled “The Hidden Land”, which was a memoir of her early life, and turning it into the basis for “Empire” after meeting with her and telling her that she was going to pitch the show to Daniels. Ironically, Sophia actually served time for putting a hit out on the man that wrote the memoir!

Empire Lawsuit Rita Grant Miller Sophia Eggleston
Empire Lawsuit Rita Grant Miller Sophia Eggleston

These are the similarities between Eggleston and “Empire” according to court documents obtained by Daily Mail:

    • Cookie was a drug kingpin that went to jail like Eggleston
    • Cookie was released from jail and placed a hit out on someone like Eggleston did
    • Cookie has a flashy wardrobe that includes the love of fur, so does Eggleston
    • Cookie has a gay son and Eggleston has a gay son
Empire Lawsuit Rita Grant Miller Sophia Eggleston

Well these claims weren’t enough for the presiding judge because he ruled in favor of Miller, Daniels, Strong, and Fox. The real kicker is that Rita Miller claims she has NEVER met Lee Daniels and she only met with Sophia twice, but never told her about pitching her story. Lee Daniels has stuck to the story that he actually got the idea for “Empire” after hearing a story about Diddy and wanting to create a “hip-hop King Lear.”

Rita released a statement about the lawsuit “nightmare” saying:

“I guess life really is like a dog: if it smells filet mignon on your plate it will bite you for it. I’m just relieved it’s over, but sadly there really isn’t any charming retreat from this sort of exploitation for anyone involved.”

What do you think about this battle?

Nia Long And Taraji P. Henson – Beef Or Bull?

Nia Long And Taraji P. Henson
Nia Long And Taraji P. Henson
Are the two ladies on Empire fighting offset and on set? Producers said that the fight between Taraji and Nia has gotten so bad that they “almost” had to shoot their scenes separately. Rumor has it, according to reports, Nia Long is so bad that she is being rude to the makeup, hair, and wardrobe staff and it made Taraji P. Henson really mad.
Although these rumors are going around that the ladies are fighting offset, just as much as they are supposed to in scenes, according to Nia’s rep, it is all completely false and nothing but stupid rumors. Her rep stated that Nia is nothing but a professional and is not fighting with anyone.

Although this may not be true, according to Nia’s rep., she will wrap up her role on season three and will not be returning to the show for season four. In this new season, Nia plays Lucious Lyon’s ex, returning to try to get back with him while Lyon is thinking of getting back with Cookie.
Do you think the rumors of these two fighting in real life are true or do you agree with Nia’s rep? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments below and let us know what you think about all of this!
