While the news of Andre and Rhonda Lyon expecting a child on Empire Season 2 makes me happy, I also have to wonder about it so far. I mean, it’s great because — as weird as it may sound — Andre and Rhonda are pretty much the most stable relationship in a show filled with topsy-turvy romances and alliances. But so far, Rhonda has no baby bump and in this week’s episode “Be True,” she seemed to react oddly when Andre talked about their baby. There was a weird awkward silence and I don’t think I was imagining it.
Perhaps her odd reaction and skepticism was more about Andre’s upcoming baptism than his fatherly joy. Maybe time on Empire moves slowly and that’s why Rhonda isn’t showing? Or could Rhonda be faking it a la Season 1 of Glee? I couldn’t help but wonder, though, what is going on with this baby and if we’re ever going to see Rhonda pregnant — and give birth.
Rhonda’s portrayer Kaitlin Doubleday told The Wrap that she starts wearing the baby bump prosthetic in Episode 5 “Be True. “And we’ve been trying to perfect it, like find the exact right shape,” she said. It didn’t seem to be too noticeable in that episode, though.
Already, the new Lyon child has been used as a power play and that makes me suspicious, since this season seems to be all about power — how to get it and how to keep it. Andre tried using his impending fatherhood to get back in Lucious’ good graces (and it backfired) and the future grandchild has given us some great banter between grandparents-to-be Cookie and Lucious.
I guess we’ll just have to tune and see what happens next.
