A Star is Born
Bryshere Ronald Gray was born on November 28, 1993 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gray and his sister were raised in West Philadelphia by his single mother.
Overbrook High School
Bryshere Gray attended Overbrook High School known for its famous alumni including Wilt Chamberlain and Will Smith. Gray began his rapping career at 16-years-old after he broke his arm playing high school football.

I’m Just A Rapper
Following the injury Yazz became obsessed with music and decided to use his newly found free time to write rhymes and develop his career. The young entrepreneur began performing on the street for passersby, earning money to help his mother pay her bills.
Gray’s hard work earned him a partnership with his manager Charles “Charlie Mack” Alston. He quickly started to get bigger bookings, including Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival, The Roots’ Picnic Festival and Power 99FM’s Powerhouse concert. The talented musician has also performed at Sunoco’s Welcome America 4th of July Celebration and Philadelphia’s ODUNDE Celebration.
Building His Empire
It all started when word spread that Lee Daneils was looking for a young man, 18-21 years old, with the ability to rap and sing. Yazz’s audition video was sent to Empire’s casting director, Leah Daniels-Butler and she immediately responded.

Empire’s casting agents saw hundreds of hopefuls try out for the part of Hakeem but Gray won them over after his took his first plane ride ever to Los Angeles where he auditioned with Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard.
Empire is Gray’s first acting gig and the 22-year-old is one of the youngest members of the show’s cast. In March 2015 it was confirmed that Gray signed on with Columbia Records.
