Katorah Kasanova Marrero (“Kat”) was born on April 3, 1992 in East New York, a neighborhood located in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The 24-year-old is better known by her stage name, Young MA. When she was a year old, her dad was sent to prison and wasn’t released until she was 11-years-old.

Young MA’s mother didn’t want her to attend New York City’s public schools so when she was 7 she moved to Virginia. Her mother has had a major influence on her career. When Kat was younger, her mother would play hip-hop and reggae music on a regular basis. Her mom and uncle used to rap but they never pursued rapping as a career.

When she was 16-years-old, she moved back to New York. After high school she worked at TJ Maxx and the New York City restaurant chain, Shake Shack.

Brother Killed To Gang Violence

When Young MA was 17-years-old, her brother was killed to gang violence. The tragic incident occurred in 2009. Her brother was 20-years-old. Her brother was a Blood, inspiring the name of her label, RedLyfe. She insists that the label is not affiliated with the gang. “RED” is an acronym for Repent Everyday Life.

On March 30, 2016, Dr. Boyce Watkins shared a video criticizing a freestyle by Young MA. After listening to the rapper’s Chiraq freestyle above, Watkins insulted the Brooklyn emcee for celebrating “Black genocide”:

Over the past few years, there have been numerous rumors about the rapper. False reports have been published about her criminal history, the identity of her father and even her gender.

Arrested

In October 2016, a rumor was started, claiming that Young MA was arrested. The story claimed that a female officer searched her after she was detained. A separate rumor alleged that she spit in a fan’s face. The rumors are false. The rapper was not arrested.

Jim Jones

The rumor mentioned above also claimed that the officer reported that Young MA looks like Jim Jones. The false report led many to believe that Jim Jones is her father. Jim Jones is not Young MA’s father. The rumor is false.
