Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Zeke Upshaw may have died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a common genetic disorder that causes thickening of the heart muscle. HCM has caused the sudden death of many young athletes. The video below provides additional information about HCM:
Zeke Upshaw Collapsed During Grand Rapids Drive Game
On Saturday, March 24, 2018, Zena “Zeke” Upshaw collapsed during an NBA G League game. Bleacher Report explains that Upshaw played forward for Grand Rapids Drive, an affiliate of the Detroit Pistons. Grand Rapids was playing the Long Island Nets at the DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Faith Family America reports that Upshaw dropped to the floor during the final seconds of the fourth quarter. He wasn’t moving after he collapsed and a woman sprinted onto the court with a defibrillator. Upshaw was taken to Spectrum Hospital where he passed away.
